Ukraine responds to the invasion with a mixture of veteran soldiers and young militia. There are 35 veterans, who are better shots but rely on outdated tactics. They are armed with bolt action hunting rifles. There are 40 young men. They use better tactics but are more headstrong. They are also armed with bolt action rifles, except for 10 of them have single barreled breach loading shotguns. They meet you at a town that stands in the way of your path to the capital. The town is on a flat, with fields on either side of the road. A stone wall runs beside the road on the right hand side. There is a farmhouse and barn a mile outside of town on the left. Woods flank the town on either side, and extend along the border of the fields up as far as the farmhouse. There is a irrigation ditch running through both fields, crossed by a stone bridge, midway between the farm and the town. It is almost deep enough for a man to stand in and not be seen. Two wagons have been turned on their side to make a barricade at the entrance to the town. Ten young militia with rifles man the barricade. Five more can be seen perched in various windows looking out into the fields. Two rows of ten veterans stand right in front of the town, front row kneeling. A straight line of fifteen veterans is marching forwards, shoulder to shoulder, from the stone bridge toward the farmhouse. Twenty of the young men with rifles, and the ten with shotguns, cannot be seen. The opposition has rushed to gather a fighting force, they are tired and ill supplied.

The squad splits into 2 groups, 40 and 40. They open fire on the men going towards the farmhouse. Guessing there is an ambush in the ditch, one squad and the marksmen move out towards the right side of the wall, and hide behind it. The other squad is creeping silently towards the ditch. This is how I understand it. www.flickr.com/photos/66842986@N07/6768773503/in/photostream

The veterans had been expecting the attack to not come just yet, and were taken by surprise for the most part. Several attempt to take aim, but old age and fear makes them move slow. They are cut down quickly. Several attempt to make it to the farm, they do not succeed. The squad that hides behind the wall gets a good vantage down the ditch, and can see ten young men with shotguns hiding in the ditch near the bridge.
(added some notes on the picture, it is mostly correct)

After the 40 man squad attacked the "farmhouse" guys, and defeated them, they moved out towards the Farmhouse, creeping slowly, expecting an ambush.
The ones approaching the wall go along the ditch to the east side of battlefield.

(Alright... you know you could have killed those guys with shotguns in the ditch right then and there, right?)
The ten men in the ditch see your forces getting into the ditch farther down and rush at your men to get within shotgun range. Some of the shotgun men are already within range, and start firing. Everything else stays quiet, except for the town bells ringing the alarm.

Right when the shotgun men got in range of firing, the UT men started running back quickly. The shotgun men obviously race after them, but the 20 men from the farmhouse squad shoot down the incoming shotgun men. Then, the UT men, tired, start marching back. The 20 man house sets off to the farmhouse, where the other 20 men are already stationed. The 40 man + snipers team start going moving towards the ditch again. They pick up any undamaged shotguns and their ammunition and sling them onto their backs.

(Keep in mind I'll be saying what the NPCs do. That being said... you are right, partially)
Two of the shotgunners were within range when the UT soldiers entered the ditch. Both fire, only one hits (you lose one man). They press to follow, but several still are further down the ditch. You kill six shotgunners, the other four climb out of the ditch when they see the men further up get shot. They make a run back for the town. The two frontmost shotguns have been badly damaged and won't be repairable. The four other are. The shotgunners were not well supplied with ammo, only six extra shells per body (that would make 36 shells salvageable at the moment) Keep in mind, these are single shot shotguns, they must be reloaded after every fire. The veterans posed before the town stand their ground, nothing else happens.

OFF TOPIC: lol, I think I can invade a new country today evening, and I didn't even finish with this one. Also, I understand. The marksmen take a shot at the fleeing shotgunners. Then, the 39 man squad + marksmen keep moving up, towards the ditch. After they are there, they wait. The men at the barn and farmhouse realize that they are too far away from the outdated tactics guys and keep moving North towards the forest to the left of the house on the map. After entering the ditch, they start to rejoin the 39 man squad. They get out of the ditch and lay on the ground, and fire upon the men in the buildings, and the outdated tactics squad. (400m approx) This is possible, forums.gunboards.com/showthread.php?236564-The-Range-of-WW1-rifles-and-machine-guns if they can put a shot with a machinegun (5/10) onto a target 1200m away, these guys can probably make around 1/2-3/4 onto 400m targets.

((@malachi: yeah, I'll try and do that. I had actually anticipated this going a lot faster, but prokhorvlg has been moving a lot slower and more careful than I had anticipated. Not that this is a bad thing, but I had anticipating this wrapping up in for or five posts.))
(alright, I can go with that) Your firing meets success. The young men in the houses are quick to see what is about to happen and duck back inside their houses. The old men are caught off guard by the range at which they are hit. 10 drop. The remaining ten decide to charge. At their charge, several younger men in hiding lose patience. Ten young men come charging out of the woods off to the right, following behind their elders in their charge.

I see.
40 men move up to meet the remaining ten who are charging, as well as marksmen reloading to pick them off. They should be an easy foe.
Since there is a wall facing the forest to the right, the remaining 39 cross the ditch and form a line at a 45 degree angle to the wall stretching from the wall out into the field on the right, waiting for the attackers to come. (See map for details.)

First group of charging enemies drops fast. (all ten die) Second group stopped and fires volley. Accuracy is poor, only four shots hit their mark. (You lose four) They reach the road further up, drop to their knees to shoot again.

The remaining 36 fire again at the advancing veterans. The marksmen move to assist the 39 man line stretching from the wall to the fields. They continue waiting. Please, can we finish with this today? Please?

You have success, all ten die. Five young men come swinging out of the woods at the right firing while moving from the woods to the town gate. They were part of an ambush failed by the over eagerness of their comrades. This leaves no veterans left. Five men in buildings, ten on the barricade. Five running to the gates while firing (so far, no hits)
(lets finish this one up.)

39 men take shot at the running 5 boys.
The men facing the gate (36) and the marksmen fire at the barricade made up of the wooden wagons, and at any flesh that might be sticking out from behind the wagons, while advancing forward. The bullets might pierce the wood as well (might).

Your superior numbers demolish all around. Running men are all killed. Men on barricades are all killed or too injured to fight. This leaves the five in buildings. Being young and untrained, their moral is shattered, and they surrender. UT is victorious.
Talk to Malachi about what benefits this country gives you.

Unless I'm mistaken, Ukraine is one of those Eastern Bloc countries that the Soviets liked so much because they weren't special and couldn't stand up as well on their own. But it's not a third world country either. So I'll give it a value $6000 daily income with standard economy increases. Unless there's a very important resource in large quantities there I should be aware of.

Yes, $6000 daily is quite a fair sum. Thank you.
